MIC Nordic Awarded Contract for Stockholm Metro Expansion
Digital radio communications are a critical part of safety in tunnel construction projects. In emergency situations, radio systems must always provide fast, reliable and effective communications.
Region Stockholm’s Administration for the Expansion of the Metro (FUT), which is currently extending the Stockholm Metro with 18 new stations and 30 kilometres of track, awarded MIC Nordic the contract to deliver a comprehensive radio communications solution for the construction phase.
In close cooperation with the client, MIC Nordic chose to combine two systems – DMR (Construction Radio) and TETRA (Rakel) – within a shared antenna infrastructure. This approach made it possible to benefit from the strengths of both systems and ensure reliable communications in all situations.
DMR is based on a multi-site architecture, enabling enhanced coverage and communication capacity across large areas such as tunnels.
The system includes a large number of portable and mobile radio units, supporting emergency alarms and multiple group call functions.
Rakel provides the level of security and resilience required in emergency situations. By integrating Rakel and DMR into the same antenna system, users can rely on Rakel for emergency communications while continuing to use DMR for day-to-day radio communications during tunnel construction activities.
Using a common antenna infrastructure for both DMR and Rakel also reduces installation costs and minimises maintenance requirements.
The combination of DMR and Rakel in a shared antenna system delivers an exceptionally robust and reliable solution. This is essential for providing users with secure, fast and effective digital communications, regardless of the situation.
MIC Nordic ensures continuous system performance through network-based monitoring connected to multiple operations centres.
The final section of the new metro expansion is scheduled to enter service in 2030.
